Thanks to the efforts of the Community Forum over the past decade the former colliery site known locally as the Bonk is now on track to become a “Green Flag” Park.

A record 554 Green Flag Awards have this year been given to sites across the country - an increase of 30% compared to last year. 55% of local authority areas now have one or more parks flying the flag, a symbol of a well managed, quality green space. Currently Wigan have none.

Following successful lottery grant applications, spearheaded by Community Forum Chairperson Councillor Peter Franzen, tremendous improvements have been made to the environment around Golborne and Lowton and this is no more evident than on the Bonk.

Existing footpaths have been upgraded; new footpaths have been installed; fishing ponds have been cleaned out and restocked; fishing platforms have been provided; sheltered seating has been installed and thousands of trees and shrubs have been planted.

Peter Franzen said “the prospect of a Green Flag award is great news for the people of Lowton and Golborne. It brings very much closer our long term objective of full time Rangers to patrol the Bonk and eliminate once and for all the menace of motorcycles, vandals and fly tippers”.

In addition to the Bonk improvements, throughout Golborne and Lowton hundreds of thousands of daffodils and crocus have been planted; flower baskets have been in place throughout the summer months; we have again had the biggest and best Christmas tree in the Borough together with more than 80 Christmas trees on the shops and Christmas festivities free for everyone; sports facilities have been provided for young people throughout the year, bollards have been installed on High Street to protect pedestrians and initiatives have been introduced to reduce crime and vandalism.

It is estimated that the Community Forum have recently brought more than £250,000 of lottery and match funding into Golborne and Lowton for environmental and associated improvements and this hasn’t cost the Council taxpayers a penny.
